We are excited to bring you news about the Clean-Up Makoko project. Makoko is a familiar Lagos community that thousands of Lagosians catch a glimpse of every day on their drive across Third Mainland Bridge. The riverine community is largely built on stilts and faces several environmental problems.
In the past, Passion House has successfully carried out six major projects, mobilizing thousands of volunteers to clean up tons of garbage in 5 different Lagos State communities in partnership with Glaxo Smith Kline and N.N Fems Ltd. The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) have also provided their support. The Clean-Up projects began with Ajegunle in 2010, Mushin, Makoko and Surulere in 2011, Oshodi in 2012 and Project Clean-Up and Recycle in 2013. We announced the Project Clean-Up Ajegunle in 2013 (in case you missed it, find it here).
Now, the initiative is back with Clean Up Makoko! This project is the 7th edition of its kind and seeks to mobilize 1000 volunteers to make a positive impact in the Makoko environment and community. This year, Passion House has partnered with Bailiff Africa, African Youth Initiative on Climate Change (AYICC) and Youth Water Sanitation and Hygiene Network. The project will be carried out in two phases:
- Phase 1 (WHO CARES Seminar for Women): Friday, June 13, 2014 – This seminar will sensitize women on personal hygiene, environmental care and the importance of clean environments in the fight against diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhea.
- Phase 2 (CLEAN-UP): Saturday, June 14, 2014 (8:00am – 12:00noon) – Volunteers will gather at Makoko community in Yaba LCDA. This 1000-person crew will clean up the community to celebrate World Environment Day.
