The Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is collaborating with the pro-poor social enterprise Wonderbag to expand access to clean cooking energy to Nigerian households. Wonderbag seeks to address energy-food poverty, empower women, and create sustainable communities living in balance with the environment.
Wonderbag and The Nigerian Alliance have teamed up to advance market based approaches to distribute the heat retention cooking device which is already in over half a million homes across Africa. Wonderbag’s incredible insulating properties allow food that has been brought to the boil to finish cooking while in the bag without the use of additional energy and health risks of traditional cooking methods. “We are proud to be working with Nigeria’s foremost cookstove organisation as part of its mission to introduce 10 million fuel-efficient stoves to Nigerian homes and institutions by 2020.” said Tobi Adewoye, Wonderbag Nigeria’s Director.
The Nigerian Alliance Secretariat at the International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development (ICEED) will provide logistics support to Wonderbag as the social enterprise launches its operations in Nigeria. In return, Wonderbag will extend its corporate partnerships with Unilever, Stanbic IBTC and CarbonSoft to The Nigerian Alliance and ICEED.

Having recently launched the 100 Million bag initiative at the World Economic Forum, which aims to have 2 million bags in use in Nigeria within the next 3 years; Adewoye explains “in just one year, the impact of having 2 million Wonderbags in use across Nigeria would save 2 billion litres of water, 24 million trees, 14 million tonnes of carbon, as well as creating ₦112 billion ($700 million) in disposable income for the poorest of households.
